Who We Are:
Egypt’s Senior Christian Scouting Organisation
Scouts and Guides Wadi El Nil (SGWEN) represents Egypt’s most established Christian youth development program, operating continuously since 1933. As a registered NGO under Egypt’s Ministry of Social Affairs (Registration No. 698), our scouting and guiding programs serve over 1,500 members across 16 districts nationwide.
Our Heritage:
Nine Decades of Youth Leadership
Founding and Early Expansion (1933-1940)
Our story began when Lebanese-Egyptian pioneers Joseph and Edgar Rabbat established the first Christian scouting troop at Cairo’s Greek Catholic Patriarchate School. By 1934, we expanded to Alexandria, laying foundations for our national Egyptian scouting network.
Modern Era Achievements
- 2000: Official organizers for Pope John Paul II’s Egypt visit
- 2017: Coordinated scout services for Pope Francis’ historic tour
- 2014-Present: Annual “Christmas Tree Service Project” aiding 10,000+ families
- 2024: Participated in the coordination of the Wolrd Scout Conferance in Egypt

Age Divisions in Scouting:
SGWEN’s Developmental Framework
Scouts and Guides Wadi El Nil (SGWEN) structures its youth programs around internationally recognized Scouting principles while adapting to Egypt’s cultural and educational needs. Our age-specific divisions ensure tailored developmental experiences, aligning with both the Egyptian Federation for Scouts and Girl Guides (EFSGG) and global Scouting standards. Below is an in-depth analysis of SGWEN’s age sections and their educational objectives.
SGWEN’s age sections:
Beaver Scouts (Ages 6–8)
- Merges existing Baraem (buds) with international Beaver Scouts framework
- Focus: Foundational skill development through play-based learning
Cubs (Ages 8–11)
- Maintains traditional Cubs program with enhanced outdoor leadership components
Scouts & Advanced Scouts (Ages 11–17)
- Combines Kachafa and Mutakadem into single progressive program
- Two-track system: Junior Scouts (11–14) and Senior Scouts (14–17)
Rovers (17+)
- Unchanged young adult leadership program
